Cinnamomum camphora
Cinnamomum camphora (Camphor Tree) - Asian native, grows slowly to 50 to 60 ft. tall and as wide. A heavy trunk and big upright, spreading limbs give it powerful structure; it's especially beautiful in rain, when bark looks black. Aromatic leaves smell like camphor when crushed. New foliage is early spring is pink, red, or bronze; matures to shiny yellow green. Inconspicuous but fragrant yellow flowers bloom profusely in late spring, followed by small blackish fruits. Competitive roots can invade garden beds, paved areas, and sewer lines.
